Yanga have promised to fight for victory against Simba in the October 10 Kariakoo Derby, dedicating their efforts to the memory of veteran supporter and club member Haji Mpili, who died on September 28.
The NBC Premier League giants will meet at a venue in Dar es Salaam in what is expected to be another fiercely contested edition of Tanzania’s biggest football rivalry.
Yanga Executive Committee member Alex Ngai said the club was determined to produce a positive result in honour of Mpili, who was buried in Pwani Region on September 29.
Ngai said the club was aware of the challenge posed by Simba, insisting that the Kariakoo Derby has traditionally been difficult for both sides regardless of their form going into the match.
“We know the match will be difficult because the Kariakoo Derby has never been an easy game, but we will fight to secure victory in honour of Mzee Mpili,” Ngai said.
He described Mpili as a committed Yanga supporter whose contribution and attachment to the club had made him a familiar figure among its members and fans.
The match will provide another chapter in the long-running rivalry between Yanga and Simba, with both sides expected to enter the contest under pressure to deliver a result for their supporters.
For Yanga, however, the October 10 encounter will carry an additional emotional significance as the club seeks to honour one of its long-standing supporters with a strong performance on the pitch.
