Njombe, Uwezo Partner to Address 3Rs Literacy and Numeracy Challenges for Pupils

The Njombe Regional Commissioner's Office in collaboration with the Tanzania Empowerment Organization headquartered in Dar es Salaam, has conducted training for teachers and facilitators to build their capacity in the implementation of the My Village Project Phase IV, as part of efforts to strengthen basic literacy skills, as well as life skills and ethics for children aged 5 to 17.

The training, which took place in Makete district, targeted teachers who will use Uwezo Tanzania's Learn method to support children by considering their actual level of learning and monitoring their progress step by step.

Furthermore, a statement issued by Uwezo Tanzania to journalists at the conclusion of the training says, this step comes at a time when Njombe Region statistics for 2026 show that in Njombe Region, among children aged 10–14, approximately 6 out of 10 children reach a minimum level of proficiency in reading, and 7 out of 10 children in numeracy. This means that 4 out of 10 children have not yet reached a minimum level of proficiency in reading, and 3 out of 10 in numeracy.

“ Our challenge is not only to ensure that children are in school, but to ensure that children who are in school are learning. We need to know what level of learning the child is at, where they are stuck and using those assessment results we will use the Learn method to increase their competence in KKK .” Baraka Mgohamwende – Managing Director, Uwezo Tanzania.
